Great Smoky Mountains National Park |
Location: Tennessee/North Carolina Border at the southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The major road through the park is Newfound Gap Road (US 441), which intersects the Blue Ridge Parkway on the south and takes one through the park north, through Newfound Gap, and on to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. A few miles further south on US 441 is the town of Cherokee, on the Cherokee Indian Reservation. Not too far south of Gatlinburg, just a few miles inside the park is the Sugarlands Visitor Center and Park Headquarters.
From this Visitor Center, heading west is Little River Road, where it eventually intersects with Tennessee 73 and Laurel Creek Road. Tennessee 73 wil take you into Townsend and/or the Townsend Vistors Center. Laurel Creek Road takes you to Cades Cove and the Cades Cove Loop Road. Accessed from Gatlinburg is Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail.
Along all of these roads one will find trail heads, quiet walk ways, pull outs, and numerous photo opportunities. All seasons are great for photography, but some roads are closed in winter. Spring and Fall are best for photography, but as stated, all seasons will provide great photographic opportunities.
