Arches National Park |
Location: Moab, Utah
With it's numerous natural arches, desert landscapes, and red rock formations, Arches is one of the most photogenic of the National Parks. It's located outside of Moab, Utah some two or three miles north on US Highway 191.
If on a quick trip, the three locations not to be missed are Delicate Arch, the Devils Garden area, and the Windows Trail. Delicate Arch is best visited near sunset. There are several beautiful arches in Devils Garden. If visiting the whole area, four to five hours should be allowed. However, even an hour or two will provide great photo opportunities. On the Windows Trail, you'll see Turret Arch, and North and South Windows Arches on this easy trail.
If you have the time, several days are needed to explore Arches NP. I recommend no less than three. Hundreds of arches and scenic bluffs are within the park, not to mention the beautiful desert scenery on its own. You can capture nearly all the highlights from the numerous pullouts and overlooks along the park road, but you'll find the best photo opportunities by getting out and taking the various trails, and doing most of your shooting during and shortly after sunrise, and shortly before and during sunset. The low angle of the sun, and this most favored of lighting situations, bring out the color of the red rocks and gives a golden glow to the desert vistas.
Numerous campgrounds, motels, and resorts are in the area, but the Moab area is a very popular tourist destination. The best time to visit the area is during April, but it can be quite busy during that time. Winter can provide unique photo opportunites. Summer, of course, will be quite hot. Fall is also a good time to visit, but you won't have the wildflowers or cactus in bloom.
