Telephoto Zoom Lenses
(All Lenses are Not Listed)

I classify telephoto zoom lenses as those that go from 60mm to 400mm on the long side and those that go over 500mm as super-long.

Nikkor 70-180mm f/4.5-5.6 Micro AF: Nikon's first true macro autofocus lens. Construction is 18 elements in 14 groups. It has a weight of 2 pounds, 2.9 ounces. Filter size is 62mm. It may become a classic.

Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 G AF-S VR AF: Nikon's fast Vibration Reduction lens in this category. Excellent, but expensive.

Nikkor 70-210mm f/4 Series E: This economical Series E family lens has 13 elements in 9groups. Weight is 25.7 ounces. Filter size is 62mm. Traditionally a very popular zoom range.

Nikkor 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D AF: Weight 20.8ounces and constructed of 12 elements in 9 groups. Filter size is 62mm. Fairly economical lens with a good range and delivers good image quality.

Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6 D AF: Another economical lens in a higher range of lengths. Construction is of 13 elements in 9 groups. Weight comes in at 18.2 ounces. Filter size is 62mm.

Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G AF: A more economical lens in a higher range of lengths. Construction is of 13 elements in 9 groups. Weight comes in at 470 grams. Filter size is 62mm.

Nikon 75-150mm f/3.5 Series E: This lens has received legendary, almost mythical, status, whether deserved or not. Probably not as great as many would like to claim, it is nevertheless a good lens giving very good image quality. This slide zoom is constructed of 12 elements in 9 groups. Weight is 18.3 ounces and it takes 52mm filters.

Nikkor 75-240mm f/4.5-5.6 AF: A compact zoom at an economical price. I have this lens and it serves well, but it is a compromise between quality and economy. Construction is 12 elements in 9 groups. It has a weight of 14.5 ounces and it takes 52mm filters. Actually does quite well on digital SLRs.

Nikkor 75-300 f/4.5-5.6 AF: Construction is of 13 elements in 11 groups. Weight 31 ounces. Filter size is 62mm. Comes with a tripod ring.

Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 AIS, AF: Weight 4 pounds, 3 ounces in AIS and 4 pounds 6.8 ounces in AF. Construction is 15 elements in 11 groups (late AF models with 16 elements). A heavy lens but of excellent quality. Filter size is 95mm.

Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 IF-ED AF: A good solid lens that stands up to heavy use. construction is 18 elements in 14 groups. Weight is 3 pounds, 8.7 ounces. Filter size is 77mm.

Nikkor 80-200mm f/4 AIS: The AIS successor to the 80-200mm f/4.5. Construction is 13 elements in 9 groups, with a weight of 28.6 ounces. It uses 62mm filters.

Nikkor 80-200mm f/4.5 AI: An early version first came out in the '60's and this lens has somewhat of a lengendary status. Construction is 15 elements in 10 groups. It's weight is 29.3 ounces and it uses 52mm filters.

Nikkor 80-200mm f/4.5-5.6 AF: Compact, lightweight and economical lens. Construction is of 10 elements in 8 groups. It has a weight of 11.6 ounces and it takes 52mm filters.

Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 AF: Wide range. Construction is of 17 elements in 11 groups. It has a weight of 47 ounces and it takes 77mm filters. Mixed reviews on this one.

Nikkor 100-300mm f/5.6 AIS: Weight 2 pounds, .8 ounces. Construction is 14 elements in 10 groups. Filter size 62mm.

Nikkor 200-400mm f/4 AIS: Great lens if you can find and afford one. Construction is 15 elements in 10 groups. Weight is 7 pounds, 15 ounces and it takes 122mm filters.

My Recommendation: The 80-200mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8 VR are the best of the lot, but expensive. For the average photographer something like the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 D or 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D AF would fill your needs, or for the manual-focus enthusiast the 80-200mm f/4 AIS or 75-150mm f/3.5 Series E. A very good off-brand AF alternatives are Tokina's 80-200mm f/2.8, and Sigma's 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom.
