The Mountains That Touch The Sky Trip: June 2006 - Page Two

June15, 2006: After napping near Limon, we drove into Colorado Springs and found our way into Manitou Springs and the Garden of the Gods before sunrise. We still had about an hour before the sun came up so found a place to eat breakfast. Once we returned to Garden of the Gods, Ian immediately wanted to get out and do some "mountain climbing." He was disapointed that he couldn't climb as easily here as he did at Castle Rock, but still liked the area, especially around Balanced Rock, where climbing was fairly easy for him.

After spending some time at Garden of the Gods, we drove up Pikes Peak. Ian was very impressed with the "mountains that touch the sky," but the high altitude of Pikes Peak bothered him and he was anxious to get back down.

Being tired and not having much sleep, we drove to Trinidad after visiting Pikes Peak. We got there early afternoon, and awaited Ian's father and his girlfriend to join us, which didn't come about until about 10:30PM. They had driven from near Salt Lake City, where Ian's daddy has been working on an out-of-town job. That's when we learned that he couldn't stay long. He'd be able to spend Friday with us, but would have to leave early the following day to be back at work Saturday night. Ian, of course, was excited that his dad would be with us when we visited the Sand Dunes, but disapointed he couldn't stay longer.
